5 common AV drawing mistakes—and their impact on site.

A drawing mistake may look small on screen, but its impact on site can be significant. A missing dimension or mismatched tag can quickly become an RFI, a delayed installation or avoidable rework.

Installers rely on drawings to locate, mount, connect and commission equipment. When critical information is missing or inconsistent, the site team must pause, interpret the design or request clarification.

Missing mounting heights

Displays, cameras, speakers and wall plates without verified heights force installers to make assumptions. The result may be misalignment, poor sightlines, inaccessible equipment or finished-wall rework.

Inconsistent device tags

A device tag that differs between a plan, elevation, schematic or schedule creates uncertainty about equipment and connections. Cross-sheet consistency prevents wrong-device installation and avoidable RFIs.

Incomplete cable routes

Unclear pathways can leave installers without an approved route, access point or realistic cable length. Drawings should identify known containment, transitions and coordination requirements.

Incorrect rack dimensions

Rack width, depth, height or usable rack units must reflect the selected equipment and room. Clearance, ventilation, power, cable management and service access also need to be considered.

Uncoordinated ceiling devices

Speakers, microphones, cameras and projectors can clash with lights, diffusers, sprinklers, access panels, structure and ceiling grids. Coordination should happen before locations reach the installer.
