AV Revit family best practices for BIM projects.
A useful AV family must do more than resemble the product in 3D. It should place correctly, display clearly, schedule consistently and remain efficient inside a live project model.
Project-ready content
Start with how the family will be used.
The correct level of Revit family development depends on its purpose. A coordination family may need accurate overall dimensions, mounting position, clearance zones and connectors. A documentation family may also require controlled plan symbols, elevation graphics, tags and schedule parameters. A manufacturer library may need consistent type naming and data across a complete product range.
Trying to reproduce every small product detail can create heavy families without improving coordination. The objective is useful accuracy: enough information to support placement, documentation and review, with geometry simplified wherever additional detail does not help the project.

These requirements should be agreed before the family is built, especially for content intended for repeated use across projects.
Correct category
The selected Revit category should support the required visibility, scheduling, tagging and hosting behaviour.
Accurate dimensions
Overall size, mounting points and reference planes should follow controlled manufacturer information.
Useful parameters
Type and instance parameters should be named consistently and limited to information the project will use.
Clear representation
Plan, elevation and 3D graphics should remain readable at the project’s intended detail levels and scales.
Controlled behaviour
Hosted, face-based, work-plane-based or free-standing behaviour should match the real installation condition.
Efficient performance
Geometry, nested content, formulas and imported data should be controlled to protect model performance.
Data and coordination
Parameters, connectors and clearance zones.
Parameter planning should begin with the project or manufacturer standard. Model number, description, manufacturer, mounting information and relevant electrical or network data may be required, but unnecessary fields create confusion. Shared parameters should be used when information must appear consistently in tags or schedules.
Connectors should represent real coordination requirements and be placed with the correct orientation and system information. Maintenance, ventilation, projection, camera-view or equipment-access zones can be represented as controllable clearance geometry when the BIM standard requires them.
Parametric control is valuable when it represents genuine product variation. Dimensions, mounting options and type configurations should be constrained predictably, with formulas kept understandable for the teams that will maintain the family.
Model performance
Detail should support the project—not slow it down.
AV projects may contain hundreds of repeated devices, so a small inefficiency in one family can multiply across the model.
