AV CAD vs Revit BIM: choosing the right workflow.
The best production platform is the one that matches the project’s coordination environment, required deliverables and available source information. For many AV integrators, that may be CAD, Revit—or a controlled combination of both.
Start with the outcome
Choose by project need, not software preference.
CAD and Revit are production tools, not project strategies. A project may be efficiently documented in AutoCAD when the contract requires coordinated 2D sheets and the architectural backgrounds are issued as DWG files. Another project may require a live Revit model because the consultant team coordinates through a shared BIM environment.
Before production begins, confirm the contractual model requirement, issue formats, drawing register, coordination responsibilities and the reliability of the source information. This prevents a team from building more model detail than the project needs—or discovering too late that a 2D workflow cannot support the required BIM exchange.
AV CAD workflow
When CAD is the practical choice.
AutoCAD remains effective for many AV shop-drawing packages, especially when speed, controlled sheet production and compatibility with established integrator standards are the priorities.
2D project environment
The architect and other trades issue reliable DWG or PDF backgrounds, and no coordinated authoring model is required.
Defined drawing package
The scope is centred on plans, RCPs, elevations, rack elevations, schematics, risers, details and schedules.
Established standards
The integrator already has mature title blocks, layers, symbols, blocks, plot styles and revision procedures.
Revit BIM workflow
When model-based production adds value.
Revit becomes valuable when AV devices must participate in multidisciplinary coordination. Model-based plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, sections, 3D views and schedules can remain connected to the same coordinated information.
The benefit depends on model quality and agreed responsibilities. Current architectural, structural and MEP links, shared coordinates, family standards, worksets and model-exchange procedures should be confirmed early. A Revit model is not automatically clash-free simply because devices are shown in 3D; it still requires controlled review and communication.

Hybrid delivery
Using CAD and Revit together.
A hybrid workflow can be efficient when the project requires BIM coordination but some system documentation is still better managed as controlled 2D content.
Coordinate
Model spatial AV devices, mounting zones and pathways in Revit against the current project links.
Document
Generate model-based plans and sections while maintaining schematic or specialist details in the agreed CAD format.
Control
Define which platform owns each piece of information to avoid duplicate tags, notes, schedules or conflicting revisions.
Issue
Export the required PDF, DWG, RVT or coordination formats using consistent naming and revision records.
