AV CAD drawings: deliverables and quality checklist.

A useful AV drawing set does more than show device locations. It translates approved system design into coordinated information that project managers, installers and other disciplines can follow throughout construction.

Purpose

What is an AV CAD drawing?

An AV CAD drawing is a scaled technical document used to communicate the location, mounting, connection and installation requirements of audiovisual systems. Depending on the project stage, the set may include plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, sections, rack elevations, schematics, riser diagrams, details, schedules and as-built information.

For an AV integrator, the drawing package connects engineering intent with site execution. It should make approved decisions clear without forcing installers to interpret incomplete markups or search across unrelated documents.

Good AV drafting also maintains a clear boundary between design and documentation. The drafting team records approved information, identifies gaps and raises focused questions instead of making unapproved engineering changes.

AV floor plans

Room references, device positions, floor boxes, wall plates, equipment locations, pathways and keyed notes shown against the architectural plan.

Reflected ceiling plans

Ceiling speakers, microphones, cameras, projectors and other overhead devices coordinated with the current ceiling background.

Elevations and sections

Display and camera heights, mounting relationships, clearances, backing requirements and enlarged installation conditions.

Rack elevations

Equipment positions by rack unit, device labels, blanking or ventilation allowances and associated rack notes.

Schematics and risers

Signal relationships, source-to-destination connections, system topology and inter-floor or inter-room pathways.

Details and schedules

Mounting details, legends, cable or device schedules, general notes and information needed to support consistent installation.

Starting information

Inputs needed before production.

Accurate AV CAD drafting begins with controlled source information. At minimum, the team should confirm the latest architectural backgrounds, approved AV design or equipment list, project scope, title block, sheet list and submission schedule.

Company standards matter as much as the design input. Layer naming, line weights, symbols, blocks, annotation rules, plot styles, revision conventions and file-naming requirements should be established before the first issue. Starting correctly reduces avoidable rework later.

Where information is incomplete, the drawing team should maintain a question log. Each query should identify the room, sheet or device involved, explain the conflict and state the decision required from the responsible engineer.

Backgrounds

Confirm the correct architectural revision, scale, orientation, room names and referenced files.

Equipment

Compare device tags, quantities and model references with the approved AV design or BOM.

Coordination

Review ceilings, walls, millwork, structure, MEP services, access zones, power and pathways.

Documentation

Check dimensions, notes, callouts, cross-references, legends, layers, line weights and sheet titles.

Cross-sheet consistencyA device shown on plan should match its tag, elevation, schematic and schedule information.
Installation clarityHeights, mounting conditions and responsibilities should be understandable without guesswork.
Revision controlEvery incorporated markup should be traceable to the correct issue and project decision.

Coordination

Common issues an AV drawing review should catch.

Ceiling devices are frequently affected by lights, diffusers, sprinkler heads, access panels and ceiling-grid changes. Wall-mounted displays and cameras can be affected by millwork, glazing, structure, door swings and available backing. Equipment rooms require checks for rack clearance, power, cooling, containment and service access.

The drawing set should not silently resolve these conditions by moving approved devices. Instead, it should document the concern and obtain direction from the appropriate design stakeholder. That protects design intent while allowing the issue to be solved before installation.

What makes a drawing set ready to issue?

An issue-ready package is coordinated, internally consistent and aligned with the agreed scope—not merely visually complete.

Before issue

  • All source markups are incorporated or recorded as open items
  • Device tags and quantities are checked across the set
  • Sheet references and detail callouts are verified
  • External references load correctly and unnecessary files are removed
  • PDF plots are reviewed at the intended sheet size

At transmittal

  • Revision and issue purpose are clearly identified
  • DWG and PDF files follow the required naming convention
  • Supporting references are included when contractually required
  • Open questions and exclusions are communicated
  • The submitted package matches the approved drawing register
